Say Yes to the Right Dress: 8 Things to Think About Before You Buy

At Something New, we know finding the dress is one of the biggest (and most exciting!) parts of planning your big day. But with so many styles, fabrics, and bridal boutiques out there, where do you even begin?

Whether you’ve been dreaming of lace sleeves since forever or have no idea what a mermaid silhouette is, we’re here to guide you every step of the way. Here’s what to keep in mind when picking your wedding dress:

1. Start with how you want to feel

Romantic? Effortless? Modern? Classic? Your dress should reflect you, not just your Pinterest board. Think about the vibe you’re going for on the day and let that guide your choices.

2. Set your budget

Before you fall in love with a gown that’s out of reach, figure out what you’re happy to spend. And don’t forget to factor in alterations, accessories, shoes, and even dry cleaning.

3. Keep your venue in mind

Getting married on the beach? A ballgown might not be your best friend. Saying “I do” in a grand hall? Go for the drama! Let your location and season help shape your dress style.

4. Shop early—but not too early

12–9 months out is a sweet spot for most brides. It gives you time to browse, order, and alter, without risking a total style change if trends or your taste shifts.

5. Be open-minded

You might be surprised by what you end up loving. Try on a mix of silhouettes, even ones you think won’t suit you. Trust your stylist (and yourself!).

6. Bring the right crew

Choose people who will support you, hype you up, and give honest (but kind) feedback. Too many opinions = stress you don’t need.

7. Comfort is key

You’ll be in this dress for hours! Eating, dancing, hugging everyone you’ve ever met. Make sure you can move, breathe, and sit without feeling like you’re in a straightjacket.

8. Go with your gut

If you can’t stop thinking about that dress, even after trying on ten more, it’s probably the one. You don’t need to cry to know it’s right (but if you do, that’s okay too).

From today until your big day, say I do
