Choosing your tribe - The Bridesmaids Proposal

One of the most exciting parts of planning a wedding? Asking your favourite people to stand by your side on the big day. But choosing your Maid of Honour and bridesmaids isn’t always as easy as popping the question with a cute gift box and a few glasses of bubbly (although we highly recommend both!).

Here’s how to approach it with clarity, confidence and a whole lot of heart.

1. Think Beyond Tradition

There are no rules here. Want two Maids of Honour? Go for it. Want your brother as your ‘Man of Honour’? Do it. Want no bridal party at all? Totally valid. This is your day, and your bridal party should reflect your relationships, not just tradition.

2. Choose the People Who Make You Feel Most Like You

Your bridal party will be with you through the highs (hello dress fittings, hens night, dance floor chaos) and the stressful moments (seating charts, family politics, maybe a last-minute panic or two). You want people who calm your nerves, hype you up, and love you for exactly who you are.

3. Don’t Feel Obligated

It’s okay if someone had you in their wedding but you don’t feel as close now. It’s okay if your cousin expects to be in it but you’re leaning toward your uni girls instead. Let go of guilt, your bridal party isn’t about politics, it’s about connection.

4. Consider the Practical Stuff Too

Location, availability, budget,  they all play a role. Bridesmaids are often asked to invest time and money, so make sure you’re choosing people who are not only emotionally supportive, but also realistically available to be involved.

5. When It Comes to the Maid of Honour…

Ask yourself: who do you trust to be your rock? The MOH often takes on more responsibility, think planning the hens, managing group chats, possibly giving a speech. They don’t have to be your oldest friend or your sister (though they can be). They just have to be the one you’d want in your corner when things get real.

6. Take Your Time

There’s no rush. If you’re unsure, wait. You don’t need to make the decision the second you get engaged. Let your gut guide you.
